ACADEMIC SKILLS ǀ MUSIC ǀ MINDFULNESS
The completion of a PhD in 2014 demanded the cultivation of a range of talents and skills: research, writing, editing, publishing, organization, time management, conference presentation, and conference organization. Barbara has also been teaching a broad range of subjects at 3rd level since 2006. These comprise academic skills to first year and final-year students, including essay writing techniques, critical thinking, referencing, note taking, presentation skills, time management, exam preparation, dissertation structure and writing. Modules lectured in were a Genre Theory Seminar, Musicology Seminar, and a seminar in Dissertation Research and Writing.
Barbara has experience as an editor including: Abstracts of Excellence: An anthology of thesis abstracts by members of the An Foras Feasa postgraduate research laboratory, ed. by Dr Barbara Strahan, Dr Gráinne Ní Bhreithiún, Dr Michael Quinn (Dublin: Codex Ltd., September 2014) and is also a published writer including five articles for The Encyclopaedia of Music in Ireland (University College Dublin Press: Dublin, 2013).
Barbara has been teaching pianoforte and musicianship for over 19 years. Age ranges are 5 years to 70+. In addition to running performance and mindfulness workshops, she implements relaxation and breathing techniques in weekly lessons to aid practice, memory, concentration, exam preparation, relaxation and performance. The practice of mindful breathing has instant benefits for the student, although these benefits vary according to the individual.
